Media Recording, Editing, Mixing, Videography and Music Technology

Modern conductors should have knowledge and proficiency in current music technologies, including Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs), to be able to effectively record, edit, and mix orchestras and other performing ensembles. They need to be proficient in recording, editing, and mixing processes and workflows. Conductors should also receive comprehensive training in audio and video recording, as well as music editing and mixing.

Module 5 (3 credits)

Modern conductors should have a command of current music technologies, primarily the current DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations), and an understanding of the methodologies, processes and workflow applications required to effectively and professionally record, edit and mix the orchestra and other performing ensembles. This necessitates conductors becoming their own recording engineer, music editor and mix/mastering sound engineer.  Additionally, the conductor should possess a myriad of skills necessary to photoshoot and edit complex video footage of their selected performances.

This course is designed to provide you with the skills set to professionally record audio and video, to edit, mix, master and deliver in a professional format, a “movie” of your own musical performance.
 
Students will receive thorough instruction covering the entire process of audio and video recording of their own orchestra/ensemble, and for the professional mixing and mastering of the music recorded therein.

What exactly will you learn:

  1. Record the conductor’s musical performance to a high professional level of competency utilising a DAW as the recording medium, effectively selecting and placing appropriate microphones for optimal sound recording maximisation.  

  2. “Produce” a recording session of the conductor’s performance
  3. “Mix” the recorded performance to a professional standard of competency 

  4. “Edit” both multi-track and two-track mixdowns of the performance to a professional standard of competency 

  5. “Master” a two-track mixdown to a professional standard of competency 

  6. Appropriately “frame” a five-camera shoot to effectively capture multi-dimensions of a complex musical performance in order to artistically and digitally showcase the optional performance result.  

  7. Import, edit, cut, and colour-grade raw camera footage into “Da Vinci Resolve” to produce professional quality promotional content 

  8. Import and sync “mixed and mastered” two-track audio into Da Vinci Resolve to be synchronised with the edited video
